Although we often think that spices simply enhance the flavours in cooking, they actually have a number of incredible health benefits. Alongside offering vibrant colours and cultivating a mix of tastes and aromas, spices are great for our health and many have a number of healing benefits.
Here are just a few of our favourite spices with great health benefits, and how you can use them in food to reap the maximum benefit.
1. Ginger. Ginger is a fairly well known spice in North America. Taking ginger when feeling sick or when suffering from an upset stomach can help tremendously. In addition to soothing sore stomachs it helps with digestion and sore joints. Add ginger to your tea or even chew on a little piece to benefit from its nutrition!
2. Pepper. Yes pepper goes hand in hand with salt and helps bring out the flavour in our food, but did you know that shaker holds a lot of health benefits? Pepper helps with digestion, prevents gases, assists with urination and sweating, and can even help with weight loss.
3. Turmeric. We have written on the benefits of turmeric before, but it is such an important spice in Ayurvedic cooking we thought we would mention it again. Tumeric boasts natural anti-inflammatory properties and also helps boost your immune system. This is the perfect spice to add to your cooking come fall and winter.
