Hyperacidity/GERD
Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease or GERD is a disease in which the stomach acid gushes up into the esophagus. This initially occurs due to excessive acid accumulation in the stomach or a reversal of the intestinal movements. Later on it will continue due to a weakened esophageal sphincter which would normally stop the upward flow of this acid. This backwash of acid irritates and inflames the lining of the esophagus, causing heartburn and intense pain. In severe cases it can damage the esophagus. This is a Pitta disorder in which the Pachaka Pitta does not function properly. Treatment of this disorder involves a following a pitta pacifying diet along with a a few yoga therapies and some herbs. In the case where it occurs due to a reverse movement of the intestine it is recognized as a Vata disease. This will require Vata anulomana methodologies(rebalancing aggrivated Vata dosha though mild laxatives).
