Hyperacidity/GERD

Hyperacidity/GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is a disease in which the stomach acid gushes up into the esophagus. This initially occurs due to excessive acid accumulation in the stomach or a reversal of the intestinal movements. Down the road, it will continue due to a weakened esophageal sphincter, which would normally stop the upward flow of this acid. This backwash of acid irritates and inflames the lining of the esophagus, causing heartburn and intense pain.

In severe cases, it can damage the esophagus. This is a Pitta disorder in which the Pachaka Pitta (Pitta sub-Dosha located in the stomach and small intestine), does not function properly. Treatment of this disorder involves following a Pitta pacifying diet along with a few Yoga therapies and some Herbal remedies.

In the case where it occurs due to a reverse movement of the intestine, it is recognized as a Vata disease. This will require Vata anulomana methodologies (rebalancing aggravated Vata Dosha through mild laxatives). If you are suffering from this condition, and would like a natural way to help alleviate the pain of acid reflux or GERD, book a consultation now.
